Why the fuck does that thing even have wireless control abilities? Did that not strike anyone as a horrible idea at design time? Being able to adjust it without surgery is obviously great, but obviously dangerous as well.

My guess is that it's not supposed to have wireless control abilities at all, but the microcontroller that deals with its normal functioning is the same one that deals with its bluetooth (or whatever they use). And it's almost certainly programmed in C without bounds checking. So you request diagnostic info, do some kind of buffer overflow, and bam!
